Release: Skype for Business on Mac is available

Howdy,

Although it is out there since couple of hours, As a MS employee had to wait for the official announcement first to publish this.

Microsoft just announced the release of the new Skype for Business on Mac making it generally available, with a clean layout yet modern look and feel, new client will provide first class experience to all the Mac users.

Office 365 customers do not have to turn on the Mobile policy to allow this client to run, you can enable the Mac usage policy without enabling the Mobile policy which I find very important, this is also coming soon to on premise infrastructures.

Download the client here (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=54108)

Consideration

Licenses

Customers need to have the proper licenses to be able to use the new client, following licenses are required:

  1. Customers with Office for Mac license that include commercial use right.
  2. Following licenses that include office for Mac & Commercial use:
    1. Office 365 ProPlus
    2. Office 365 E3 or E5
    3. Office 365 Business or Business Premium
    4. Office Home and Business for Mac
    5. Office Standard for Mac

Supportability

There is a great article that answers most of the open questions surrounding the client that you can read here (https://support.office.com/en-us/article/FAQ-Skype-for-Business-on-Mac-878fff6e-fc22-4917-870a-584478cb55ef?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US&fromAR=1)

Here are some:

  • Skype4b on Mac required El Capitan or newer to run.
  • Support integration with Outlook and one-click start feature
  • Supporting Skype for Business and Lync 2013 infrastructure as well as Skype4b Online, not supported with Lync 2010 infrastructure
  • No supportability for Persistent chat, no plan to extend this feature outside of the windows client.
  • Not supported to run it side by side next to Lync for Mac 2011, Make sure to uninstall the old one as this will not be done automatically

Training

Customers can find videos on how to run and use Skype4b on Mac in Skype operation Framework also there is available article starting here
