Skype for Business Video Interop Server – Part 1

Howdy,

This is part 1 of a two parts article where I will be talking about planning, installing and configuring the new server role Microsoft introduced with the release of Skype for Business Server 2015, the Video Interoperability Server.

Many companies have their existing Cisco video teleconferencing systems and when thinking of integrating this with existing or ” a To-be” Skype for Business infrastructure they find out that the cost will be high because when it comes to video integration between Microsoft and Cisco it is never a direct integration and is possible, or let’s say was possible only by using a 3rd-party solutions which will increase the investment even more.

Well if you have a Cisco Video Teleconferencing system and want or considering deploying Skype for Business but worried about your investments, worry no more, Skype for Business Video Interoperability Server “VIS” is designed for your situation and with no additional cost.

Manually Lync/Skype for business Enabling of Active Directory contacts

Howdy,

We upgraded recently our Polycom RMX/DMA infrastructure which added the Skype video calling functionality as well as the presence for the DMA rooms in Lync.

According to Polycom official integration guide, they gave two options to enable the presence for the rooms, one automatic using a service account with Domain / Lync administrative privileges (which is not always an option for customers and was not an option also for my company), or there is the other way which is manual method which was not mentioned in the guide.

So I received a request to find a way to enable those contact as a Lync contact without giving this admin privileges to the DMA, if you try to use the Lync control panel you will face a problem when trying to search for the contact object you created and want to use. So following I will show the way to manually enable Active Directory contact objects for Lync 2013, to use it in whatever you need

Supported or not Supported, this is the Question

Howdy,

UPDATE 19-01-2015: thanks to Lync MVP Thomas Poett, and his input, I updated the article

how many times did you stumble upon a question from a customer if a certain feature or deployment scenario is supported by Microsoft and Lync 2013 or not.

we all forget, I mean there is a new stuff happening in our world (UC) every minute and sometime we loss tracks, so I have what I call my SCS (supported Cheat sheet) where I keep all information I have through my years in Lync by something I read or researched or learned from someone else about Lync supportabilities, and I decided to share it here in a blog article about what is supported or not supported regarding Lync 2013.

feel free please to correct my information, or put a comment about something I did not mentioned and I will be add it to this article, the purpose is to use this article as a fast / complete resource for “supported or not supported” questions.
